The Poet’s Home – free housing on Fanø

The Poet’s Home is a charming, thatched building in the old naval town of Sønderho – celebrated as the prettiest village of Denmark.

The building belonged to the former Minister of Culture, late Julius Bomholt, and is offered as free housing for Nordic authors for 3-12 months.

The house is fully remodeled, contains all necessary furniture and comes with a huge garden. The stay in the Poet’s Home is free, but you will have to cover expenses for electricity, heating and cleaning. Firewood is free of charge. The house offers free access to high speed internet. Please note that your stay may be taxable, depending on your personal situation.

Sønderho is a well-functioning village with shops, restaurants and an interesting cultural life. During the summer the village is full of visitors and life – during the winter mostly locals remain.

Any Nordic author can apply for a stay at the house. There is no application form as such, but the Board evaluates applications individually and grants stays. The board looks at the purpose of the stay - including what literary works the applicant seeks peace and quiet for.

You can apply for a stay anywhere from three to twelve months, as the year is divided into three-month slots. If you are applying for a stay longer than three months, please bear in mind that your stay must be continuous and cover at least one winter-slot.

The slots are the following

  • January – March
  • April – June
  • July – September
  • October – December

Next period of residence

1 January 2023 and one year onwards.

Application deadline

August 14, 2022.

You are expected to take possession of the house at the beginning of the month and leave again by the end of the month.

You can contact the administration by phone (+45) 7616 1907 or by email biblio@esbjerg.dk. You can also seek information though members of the Board.

Applications in writing, stating the time period you are applying for, are to be sent by email or mail, addressed to the Board of the Poet’s Home – Julius Bomholts Hus.
